Jamie Carragher built an illustrious playing career with Liverpool before becoming one of football’s most recognisable television pundits.
The former defender spent his entire 17-year professional career at Anfield after progressing through Liverpool’s youth academy.
Carragher made 737 appearances for the Reds, placing him second on the club’s all-time appearance list behind Ian Callaghan.
He also served as vice-captain for a decade and won 11 major trophies during his Liverpool career.
Those honours included two FA Cups, three League Cups, a UEFA Cup and the Champions League.
Carragher also earned 38 England caps before retiring from professional football in 2013.
After retirement, he moved into broadcasting and became a prominent member of Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage.
He also co-hosts Monday Night Football and regularly appears on the Stick To Football podcast.
Furthermore, Carragher has developed an international media profile through his work on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage.
However, the 48-year-old now faces a serious financial matter involving the UK tax authority.
According to City AM, HMRC has filed a petition seeking to have Jamie Carragher declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill.
Solicitors representing HMRC submitted the case against James Lee Duncan Carragher at the High Court in London. The exact value of the outstanding tax liability has not been made public.
HMRC does not comment on individual cases but says it takes a supportive approach towards customers with tax debts.
The department offers options such as instalment plans and only pursues bankruptcy through the courts as a last resort.
Carragher’s representatives called the situation a private tax matter and acknowledged that they should have addressed it sooner.
They also confirmed that Carragher is taking steps to settle the outstanding tax liability. Those steps could lead HMRC to withdraw its petition, allowing Carragher to avoid bankruptcy.
If withdrawn, Carragher would avoid bankruptcy and the restrictions that can follow such an order.
