Tottenham Hotspur made major changes to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad during an expensive summer transfer window. Spurs spent more than £300 million after strengthening several areas of the first team.
Sandro Tonali arrived from Newcastle United for £100 million, while Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham United.
Tottenham also signed Jan Paul van Hecke, Omar Marmoush and Savio during the window.
Mykhailo Mudryk completed a deadline-day loan move, while Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi arrived on free transfers.
The club also sanctioned several departures as De Zerbi reshaped his squad. Cristian Romero joined Atletico Madrid for €40 million, while Brighton signed Luka Vuskovic for £46 million.
Despite those defensive changes, Tottenham also pursued another centre-back during the summer.
According to Globo Esporte, Tottenham Hotspur submitted a €21 million offer for Athletico Paranaense defender Arthur Dias.
The proposal covered 80 per cent of the 19-year-old’s rights, but Athletico rejected the bid. Tottenham had already followed Dias for several months before making their offer.
Spurs sent scouts to Brazil in April to watch him against Atletico-GO and Vitoria. Athletico previously valued the defender between €20 million and €25 million.
However, the Brazilian club now wants around €30 million before considering a sale. Tottenham have not ended their interest following the unsuccessful summer approach.
Globo Esporte reports that Spurs intend to make further attempts to sign Dias in the future. The defender has also strengthened his reputation through his performances at club and international level.
Dias won the South American Under-20 Championship with Brazil last year. He has now earned a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s preliminary Brazil squad for the September internationals.
Tottenham therefore continue to follow his development after failing to complete a summer deal.
