Lisandro Martinez has triggered a fierce debate after publicly criticising Manchester United’s hierarchy following another damaging defeat.
United lost 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, extending their winless sequence to five matches.
Martinez subsequently questioned the club’s ambition and summer recruitment strategy. The defender specifically targeted technical director Jason Wilcox and demanded greater investment.
United had spent £155M strengthening midfield but left other areas without significant reinforcements.
Martinez later doubled down during another interview, insisting the club needed greater ambition. The Argentine said:
“As a club, I expect more. I’m not gonna close my mouth; we need to have more ambition.”
His comments divided supporters and pundits, but Mark Goldbridge offered emphatic support. Goldbridge wrote on X:
“Lisandro Martinez build him a statue. Finally a serving player calling out the board and owners.”
He also urged the dressing room to support Martinez immediately. However, Piers Morgan quickly highlighted Goldbridge’s contrasting reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive Manchester United interview in 2022.
Morgan reminded Goldbridge that Ronaldo had publicly challenged the club years earlier during their controversial interview. He responded:
“Hmm… actually, Cristiano did it first, in my 2022 interview with him.”
Morgan then exposed Goldbridge’s previous verdict, reminding him that he called Ronaldo’s interview ‘very sad’ and a ‘bad bad mistake’. Goldbridge had also described it as ‘pretty vulgar clickbait.’
Ronaldo used that interview to criticise United’s hierarchy, infrastructure and sporting direction. He claimed people inside the club wanted him gone and said he felt betrayed.
He also attacked Erik ten Hag, saying he could not respect the manager because that respect was not reciprocated.
United announced Ronaldo’s departure by mutual agreement five days after the complete interview appeared.
Goldbridge later defended his differing positions during a YouTube livestream. He argued Ronaldo had already stormed out, while Martinez remained committed to playing and winning with United. Morgan refused to back down and responded:
“Jealousy is a terrible thing, Mr Goldbridge!”
