After Rodrigo de Paul moved to Inter Miami, Atletico Madrid are looking to add a midfielder of the same calibre.
The Argentine has been fantastic for Atletico since joining in 2021 from Udinese. The 31-year-old played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022.
So, losing a player like De Paul was tough for Diego Simeone, who has been searching for the right replacement for a long time.
However, the Madrid club had a bad time in the transfer market this summer. They did sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. But they need a more experienced and proven midfielder.
In the summer, Atletico Madrid wanted to sign a centre-back from Tottenham Hotspur. They were seriously pursuing a move for the current Spurs captain Cristian Romero.
However, the move did not go through and the reason was the high price the Spurs were charging. Now, the Madrid club is back for another player from the Spurs.
Tottenham Hotspur have a very good squad of midfielders. That is why some of them will not get enough game time under their new manager, Thomas Frank.
So, some of them will look to find a new club in January. Thus, there will be opportunities in the market to grab some great talent from the Spurs.
According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid might make a move for the Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. The former Juventus player has been instrumental for the Spurs in the midfield.
That is why it is unlikely that Tottenham would sanction a sale for the midfielder. Thomas Frank has shown that he trusts Bentancur, as he gave him enough game time.
However, as his contract is expiring next summer, and if Bentancur doesn’t sign a new deal, the Spurs might be compelled to sell the Uruguayan in January.
So, it will be interesting to see whether Atletico waits till next year or tries to sign the midfielder in January.
