Liverpool entered the season searching for defensive reinforcements. However, the summer window closed without success.
Marc Guehi was the top target. The Crystal Palace man even completed a medical at Anfield on deadline day.
After that, the move collapsed. Palace could not find a replacement, and Guehi stayed in London.
Since then, the defender has helped his side remain unbeaten. Palace even became the first team to beat Liverpool this season with a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park.
So, attention has turned to January. Liverpool still want to add a centre-back in the winter window.
Reports linked them strongly with Dayot Upamecano. But fresh updates from Germany have complicated matters.
Bayern Munich director Max Eberl admitted that interest in the Frenchman is not a surprise. Also, he confirmed the club are pushing for an extension.
The Bundesliga champions want to convince Upamecano to stay. They see him as part of their sporting project beyond this season.
The centre-back’s current deal expires at the end of the campaign. Therefore, Liverpool had hoped to swoop for him on a free transfer.
However, Bayern’s stance has now made that scenario unlikely. The club are determined to keep him at the Allianz Arena.
For Liverpool, it is a frustrating blow. Defensive depth remains an issue for Arne Slot.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are still the first-choice pairing. But injuries have been a concern in the past.
Joe Gomez is the only backup. Also, the Englishman has been linked with a possible departure. Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni has also suffered a terrible ACL injury.
Therefore, Liverpool must look again at the market. Guehi and Upamecano remain prime names, but neither deal will be simple.
As January approaches, the Reds know that without new signings, their defensive line could be exposed in the second half of the season.
