Crystal Palace fans might have crossed the line. Premier League fans have a knack for depicting banners during games that send a message.
These banners have been a way for them to make their voices heard. So, Palace fans thought that they were doing the same thing during a game.
However, the Football Association (FA) has deemed the banner offensive, and the South London-based football club will now face punishment.
Under Oliver Glasner, Palace are becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. This season, they have won 4, lost 2, and drawn 4 games.
Currently, they are in the 9th position in the Premier League table. Also, the Eagles are in Europe due to the fantastic season they had last year. Palace finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
However, Crystal Palace won the first-ever trophy in their club’s history when they beat Manchester City at Wembley Stadium to win the FA Cup.
This ensured that Oliver Glasner’s men would be in Europe next season. They were supposed to play in the Europa League.
However, at that time, John Textor was one of the shareholders of Crystal Palace. The American businessman is also the owner of the French club, Lyon.
That is why, due to the violation of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, Crystal Palace were relegated to the Conference League and Nottingham Forest took their place.
Palace fans were not happy with this decision of UEFA. That is why, during Forest’s visit to Selhurst Park, Palace fans decided to put up a banner.
That banner depicted the Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis holding a gun to the head of Morgan Gibbs-White. The text on the banner read:
“Mr Marinakis is not involved in blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking or corruption.”
Marinakis has always denied such allegations against him. Tottenham Hotspur triggered Gibbs-White’s release clause this summer to sign him.
But the Forest owner threatened legal actions against the Spurs, and soon, Gibbs-White signed a new deal with the club.
So, the FA have seen this banner as an offensive, improper, and provocative or abusive behaviour from the Crystal Palace fans.
That is why the club will now face charges from the governing body as they failed to maintain the behaviour of their fans.
Now, the FA have given Palace a deadline till 11 November 2025 to provide a response to the charges from the governing body.
