Football is the biggest sport in the world by far. And the reason for its popularity is fans. They are the ones, who make football the best sport.

During COVID times, football games weren’t had the same feeling, as there were no fans in the grounds. Now, tragedy happened to one of those football fans.

Something devastating happened in Spanish football on Sunday evening as a Segunda Division match was abandoned following the sudden collapse and death of a supporter in the stands, as per The Sun.

The emotional scenes unfolded during the clash between Cueta and Almeria at the Alfonso Murube Stadium.

The match had barely reached the 18-minute mark when play was halted after a fan was seen collapsing in the home section of the ground.

Moreover, Red Cross paramedics and emergency staff immediately rushed to the scene, providing urgent medical assistance, including CPR, for around ten minutes.

The players and spectators watched on in shock. The 73-year-old man was then carried out of the stadium on a stretcher to loud applause from both sets of supporters.

They were hoping for the best as he was taken to hospital. Therefore, the game briefly resumed, with Adri Embarba equalising for Almeria after Kuki Zalazar’s early opener for Cueta.

However, during the half-time interval, devastating news filtered through.

Local media confirmed that the man as Manolo Carreto, who was a former chief of police. He had sadly passed away despite the efforts of medical teams.

Furthermore, both clubs and match officials immediately met to discuss the situation.

After a short deliberation, the referee made the difficult but inevitable decision to abandon the match out of respect for the deceased.

Also, the announcement was made over the public address system, drawing a solemn silence from those still inside the ground.

Thus, the match will be rescheduled at a later date. But for everyone present at the Alfonso Murube Stadium, the result no longer mattered.
