Liverpool are in a downward spiral. The loss to Nottingham Forest was not only expected but also a sign of how low the Reds have fallen since their title win last season.
In the last 11 games, Liverpool have lost eight. Now, Arne Slot’s job is on the line. However, Liverpool bosses are backing their Dutch manager.
But betting odds are already predicting who can replace Slot at Anfield. Now, a Manchester United legend has pointed out the reason for Liverpool’s downfall in a shocking way.
Paul Scholes says Liverpool’s collapse did not begin this season. He believes it started last spring, right after they wrapped up the Premier League title.
Scholes claims the players switched off early and lost their edge. He also aims his strongest criticism at Arne Slot.
Scholes says Slot showed “disrespect” when he flew to Ibiza before the season finished. He recalls seeing the manager on stage at O Beach with Wayne Lineker while Liverpool still had matches left.
The Manchester United legend said while appearing on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast:
“I think this started towards the end of last season. The bad form started; they went away, went to Ibiza or something.
“Arne Slot was DJing. Honestly, DJing in Ibiza. I think that’s disrespectful that, before the season’s done. I think that’s classless.”
He says that moment summed up a team that stopped taking the run-in seriously. Scholes insists that top-level football does not allow early celebrations.
Liverpool ended last season with four winless games. They then carried that slump into the new campaign.
Slot’s side now sit 12th in the table after losing six of their last seven league fixtures and eight of their last eleven overall. Scholes says this run proves the team never refocused after the title party.
