Liverpool weigh £78 million bid for Premier League defender

Transfer Update - Liverpool

Liverpool are weighing up a major move in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.

The Reds are not having a great season. After winning the Premier League the last season and with the summer transfer window they had, Liverpool were expected to dominate Europe this season.

However, the results are not there on the pitch. They had to share a point with Burnley in their last Premier League game at Anfield.

So, even after winning the Premier League last season, Arne Slot’s position at Anfield is becoming uncertain.

Also, with Xabi Alonso becoming available, many are calling for Slot’s sacking. But for now, the Reds are sticking with the Dutch manager.

Also, they have failed to land Marc Guehi, who is moving to Manchester City. After missing out on the England international in the summer, they wanted to sign him next summer as a free agent.

However, Manchester City made the move first and agreed on a fee with Crystal Palace to sign the player. It will be a huge blow for the Reds. They are now looking at alternatives.

Transfer News Live has already reported that they are looking at Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni. But they are looking at another player with Premier League pedigree.

Liverpool have identified Micky van de Ven from Tottenham Hotspur as a top target. But signing the defender will not be easy.

The 24-year-old remains under contract until 2029, which puts Spurs in a strong negotiating position. However, according to Fichajes, Liverpool are determined not to let the situation drag on.

The report claims the Merseyside club are ready to table an offer worth €90 million, around £78 million, in an attempt to force Tottenham into a difficult decision.

So, it looks like Liverpool have learned from their Marc Guehi mistake. Now, they are ready to rectify it by signing a Premier League-proven defender like Micky van de Ven.
