An English football legend has revealed how close he came to losing his life. Former player has admitted he is lucky to be alive after being kidnapped and held at knifepoint.
The incident happened during a harrowing ordeal that began with what appeared to be a routine job opportunity. He travelled believing he was attending interviews for a lucrative managerial role.
Speaking to The Athletic, Former Everton icon Adrian Heath explained how carefully the trap was laid. Up until the moment he arrived, there were no warning signs.
In fact, Heath had done his due diligence. He spoke to trusted contacts, including Steven Gerrard, who had previously worked in the region, to reassure himself about the opportunity.
However, everything changed once he landed. In November, Heath boarded a flight to Morocco, where he was told he would meet “the sheikh”, a businessman supposedly involved in hotels and other ventures.
On arrival, two men carrying flowers greeted him warmly and drove him away in a car. But instead of a hotel, he was taken to a small harbour town.
Soon after, he was led into a room where three men were waiting. That was when the reality of the situation became clear.
One of them told him bluntly that this was not what he thought it was. After that, the threats escalated.
The men demanded money, warning that if he did not comply, he would never see his wife, children or grandchildren again. The ransom was set at a six-figure sum.
Meanwhile, Heath tried to buy time. He told them his wife would not be able to send money immediately due to banking restrictions in the United States.
Eventually, the captors called his wife, Jane. Sensing something was wrong, she refused to transfer money, explaining that she could not access the account without him present.
His son, Harrison, traced Heath’s location using tracking data and alerted authorities through an FBI contact. Shortly after, the kidnappers abruptly ended negotiations.
Against all odds, Heath was driven to the airport and released. He returned home to his family, with the FBI providing round-the-clock protection in the days that followed.
Only later did Heath decide to speak out, after learning another manager had been targeted in a similar way. Today, he knows just how close he came to tragedy.
