Bayern Munich were very much interested in signing Cody Gakpo last summer. The Bavarians even opened talks with the Dutch international for a possible move, as Transfer News Live reported.
Moreover, Cody Gakpo himself revealed that Bayern made contact to sign him. However, the deal did not go through, and Bayern signed Luis Diaz from Liverpool instead.
Since Diaz left the club, Gakpo had to take up the responsibility of the left flank. And so far this season, his form has been disappointing.
In 34 games in all competitions for the Reds, the 26-year-old has managed only seven goals and four assists. This has been one of the major issues at Liverpool.
When Arne Slot gave the green light to the Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich deal, he would have thought that Cody Gakpo would step up and elevate his game.
However, his game has regressed, and Diaz has taken his game to the next level. At Bayern, the Colombian has been one of the best players this season.
In 32 games for the German giants, the 29-year-old has struck 19 goals and given away 15 assists. He is helping Bayern to stay in contention for all trophies this season.
Liverpool are missing Luis Diaz’s intensity and high pressing skills. However, there were reports that Bayern may return for Gakpo next summer.
But according to Football Insider, the German giants are very happy with Luis Diaz, and they have no plans of returning for Cody Gakpo.
The German champions believe that Diaz has been the right pick for them, and that is why they have no plans of signing Gakpo next summer.
Liverpool will be hoping that Gakpo gets his form back. Otherwise, it will be difficult for them to qualify for the Champions League.
