Tottenham’s difficult season took another painful turn this week.
Spurs suffered a humiliating 5–2 defeat against Atletico Madrid, a result that quickly sparked criticism from supporters and pundits alike.
The North London side were overwhelmed early in the match, conceding several goals during a disastrous opening spell that left them chasing the game almost immediately.
For a team already struggling to build confidence, the heavy defeat only intensified the pressure surrounding the club.
Tottenham’s campaign has been marked by inconsistency, managerial scrutiny and growing frustration among fans.
The loss in Spain served as another reminder of just how difficult the season has become for the squad.
One of the players who has spoken openly about the situation is Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.
The Dutchman has been a shell of his former self in the turmoil.
According to Ziggo Sport, Van de Ven admitted the early moments of the match spiralled out of control for the team.
“Everything that could go wrong in the first twenty minutes went wrong. Everyone slips, including me. Those are moments you simply can’t do anything about. I can’t just stand here and start blaming the pitch.”
But the Dutch defender also spoke honestly about the emotional toll the situation has taken.
“I could tell you the usual ‘we have to stick together’ quotes. But to tell you the truth, what we are going through right now is horrific. Mentally I’m low. I’m done with it. I don’t touch my phone anymore, I only see my family and that’s it.”
Van de Ven’s comments reflect the frustration currently surrounding Tottenham, as the club attempts to navigate one of its most difficult periods in recent seasons.
For Spurs, the challenge now will be finding a way to regain belief, during the remainder of the campaign.
