The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already underway, with nations across the globe preparing for football’s biggest tournament.

Set to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the 2026 edition will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams.

This would make it the largest tournament in the competition’s history.

Among the countries to have already secured qualification for the tournament is Iran, who booked their place early and were expected to compete once again on the global stage.

Iran’s national team had been drawn into Group G, where they were scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

Matches have been planned to take place in American cities including Los Angeles and Seattle.

For Iran, the tournament was set to represent another opportunity to showcase their national side on football’s biggest stage.

So why won’t Iran play?

Iran’s participation in the competition has now been thrown into serious doubt following dramatic developments away from the pitch.

Political tensions in the region have escalated in recent weeks, raising questions about whether Iran will actually take part in the tournament despite already qualifying.

According to The Guardian, Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Donyamali has stated that “Iran cannot participate in the 2026 World Cup under the current circumstances”.

Donyamali reportedly said that “under no circumstances” could Iran play at the World Cup.

This follows the ongoing conflict involving Iran and security concerns following recent military actions in the region.

The comments have created uncertainty around whether Iran will ultimately appear at the tournament, despite having already secured qualification.

If Iran ultimately withdraws from the competition, the country could face financial penalties and possible sanctions from FIFA.

For now, the situation surrounding Iran’s participation remains unresolved.
