Chelsea are facing a growing dilemma as pressure builds on Liam Rosenior following another damaging result in the Premier League.
The Blues suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton, which has only intensified scrutiny around the manager.
The result left Chelsea seven points behind Liverpool, who currently hold the final Champions League qualification spot.
That loss also pushed the club into unwanted history. Chelsea have now lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time since 1912.
Naturally, frustration among supporters has increased. Calls for a managerial change have started to grow louder, especially after the performance at the Amex Stadium.
However, any decision may not be straightforward. Rosenior only arrived in January as the successor to Enzo Maresca.
He signed a long-term six-and-a-half-year contract upon taking charge at Stamford Bridge.
According to The Sun, the Chelsea boss earns around £4 million per year. That detail now plays a major role in any potential decision.
As a result, the club could face a massive financial hit if they decide to part ways with him. Chelsea may have to pay up to £24 million in compensation if they choose to sack Liam Rosenior.
That figure depends on the structure of his contract and whether any clauses exist. However, recent history suggests the final amount may not reach that level.
Chelsea adjusted their approach after Graham Potter’s departure. The former manager received a significant payout, similar to Thomas Tuchel, who collected around £13 million.
Mauricio Pochettino also received £10 million, while Maresca waived compensation. Meanwhile, Rosenior has openly criticised his players following the Brighton defeat. He said:
“Unacceptable in attitude. I keep coming out and defending the players – that’s indefensible.
“That performance tonight, the manner of the goals we conceded, the amount of duels that we lost, the lack of intensity in the team. Something needs to change drastically right now.”
Now, Chelsea must decide whether to back Liam Rosenior or make another costly change.
