Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at the 2026 World Cup under intense scrutiny. Portugal’s disappointing draw against DR Congo sparked criticism of both the team and their captain.
Questions were emerging about whether the veteran forward could still perform on football’s biggest stage. The pressure increased as Portugal prepared for their second group-stage match.
Critics called for changes, while reports of unrest around the national team dominated headlines ahead of a must-win fixture.
However, Ronaldo delivered the perfect response when Portugal faced Uzbekistan.
The Portugal captain scored twice in a commanding 5-0 victory to help his country get their World Cup campaign back on track.
His first goal arrived inside six minutes after he finished a move created by Joao Cancelo.
The strike also secured a place in World Cup history. Ronaldo became the first player ever to score in six different World Cup tournaments.
Portugal continued to dominate throughout the match and Ronaldo added a second goal before half-time after connecting with a pass from Bruno Fernandes.
The veteran forward came close to completing a hat-trick as Portugal overwhelmed their opponents.
While the result boosted Portugal’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages, Ronaldo’s reaction after the game attracted even more attention.
According to the Daily Mirror, Ronaldo appeared to send a direct message to his critics after the final whistle.
Cameras caught the five-time Ballon d’Or winner mouthing two simple words: “I’m back.”
The moment capped a memorable evening for the Portuguese star, who had faced growing doubts following the opening match of the tournament.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez also stood by his captain despite calls for changes to the starting lineup.
That decision paid off as Ronaldo produced one of his strongest performances of the competition so far. Now, the race for the World Cup Golden Boot remains highly competitive.
Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have all enjoying strong starts to the tournament. However, Cristiano Ronaldo has now firmly entered the conversation.
