Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future remains uncertain following his extraordinary fallout with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus.
The dispute erupted after Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.
Ronaldo had warmed up for around 30 minutes but never entered the match. He subsequently left Portugal’s camp before their meeting with Denmark.
The 41-year-old later released an extensive statement explaining his decision and accusing Jesus of breaking his word.
Ronaldo claimed the manager had previously promised him around 30 minutes against Norway. He also detailed an agreed post-match statement that Jesus ultimately did not follow.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently placed Ronaldo under a provisional suspension after his departure from international duty.
Although Ronaldo previously indicated his desire to return, his sister has now raised serious doubts.
According to The Sun, Elma Aveiro believes Ronaldo is currently more likely to stay away from Portugal than return. She said:
“It’s more likely a no than a yes. I think both [Ronaldo and Jesus] are hurt. It was a situation they experienced, not me, I’m speaking for my brother.”
Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister believes the breakdown in trust has created a major obstacle to reconciliation. Aveiro said:
“I think it’s a situation that’s stalled, we’ll see what happens. I don’t know, it’s very complicated. When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal.”
Aveiro also expressed frustration with the reaction towards her brother after everything he has contributed internationally.
“My feeling is one of sadness because the Portuguese people unfortunately forget what has already been done and think that things should be done differently now.
“I’m speechless, it’s very difficult to see my brother go through this. He is one of the people who least deserve this.”
Portugal recorded Nations League victories against Norway and Denmark while Ronaldo watched from home.
The forward has since returned his attention to Al-Nassr and scored his 981st career goal. Portugal officials and Jesus have left the door open for Ronaldo’s return.
However, his sister’s comments suggest repairing the relationship could prove considerably more difficult than expected.
