Southampton’s nightmare week has now taken another dramatic turn after the Football Association officially launched an investigation into the club’s growing “Spygate” scandal.
The Championship side already suffered a huge punishment. They were expelled from the play-offs following allegations of spying on rival teams during the season.
Now, the FA confirmed they will carry out a separate investigation after reviewing the evidence surrounding the controversy.
Southampton originally faced punishment after admitting to filming Middlesbrough during a training session before their Championship play-off semi-final clash earlier this month.
However, the situation quickly became even more serious. Authorities later charged the club with additional spying allegations involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town during the campaign.
As a result, an independent disciplinary commission removed Southampton from the play-offs and also handed the club a four-point deduction for next season.
Middlesbrough have now been reinstated and will face Hull City in the play-off final for a place in the Premier League. They originally lost the semi-final against Southampton.
Southampton attempted to appeal the punishment, but officials rejected the appeal and confirmed the sanctions would remain in place.
Following that decision, the FA released a short statement confirming another investigation is now underway. The statement read:
“We will now investigate, and won’t comment further until we have assessed the evidence.”
Southampton’s season originally looked like a major success after the club climbed from 21st place in November to fourth by the end of the regular campaign.
However, the “Spygate” controversy has now completely overshadowed their progress on the pitch.
And with the FA investigation still ongoing, uncertainty continues growing around the club heading into next season.
Also, there will be uncertainty around the players as Manchester United are ready to take advantage of this situation.
