Manchester United’s search for a new midfielder could now take an unexpected turn after major controversy erupted around Southampton.
The Saints currently face chaos after the EFL punished the club over allegations involving unauthorised filming of rival teams during the Championship season.
Southampton reportedly admitted multiple breaches of league regulations after recording Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Ipswich Town throughout the campaign.
So, the EFL expelled Southampton from the Championship play-offs and also handed the club a four-point deduction for next season.
Southampton immediately appealed the decision, but uncertainty now surrounds the club’s future and finances heading into the summer transfer window.
That situation could reportedly create opportunities for several Premier League clubs. United are already planning a major midfield rebuild with Casemiro leaving Old Trafford.
Manuel Ugarte could also depart as United continue searching for younger and more energetic midfield options.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson remains one of the club’s dream targets. However, Forest reportedly value the midfielder at around £100 million.
Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali also features on United’s shortlist but would still cost close to £80 million.
Now, according to The Mirror, Manchester United could intensify their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Shea Charles as a cheaper alternative.
The 22-year-old reportedly attracted United’s attention after an impressive season despite Southampton’s problems. Charles scored 6 goals and provided 2 assists in 38 games this campaign.
He also earned praise after scoring against Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals and later netting the winning goal against Middlesbrough during the Championship play-off semi-final.
Reports claim Southampton value the midfielder at around £20 million, making him significantly cheaper than Anderson or Tonali.
Now, with Southampton facing uncertainty after the “Spygate” controversy, Manchester United may believe the Saints could become more open to selling one of their key midfielders this summer.
