The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already delivered everything football supporters could have hoped for. Several football giants have justified their status during the group stage.
At the same time, a number of underdogs have frustrated higher-ranked opponents to keep the race for the Round of 32 wide open.
The tournament has also produced remarkable individual displays. Lionel Messi became all-time to goal scorer at the World Cup after starring against Algeria and Austria.
Cristiano Ronaldo created history by scoring in a sixth different World Cup. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Erling Haaland have all strengthened their reputations.
However, the World Cup has not been remembered only for breathtaking goals and unforgettable victories.
One incident has instead become one of the tournament’s darkest moments after a reckless challenge left a player with a serious injury and forced FIFA to take decisive disciplinary action.
According to The BBC, FIFA’s disciplinary committee has suspended Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for five matches after his challenge on Canada’s Ismael Kone during Qatar’s 6-0 defeat last Thursday.
Madibo was dismissed during the match following the tackle. The challenge resulted in Kone suffering fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg.
FIFA later ruled that the offence amounted to serious foul play, although the suspension remains subject to appeal. The injury has brought Kone’s tournament to an unfortunate end.
The 24-year-old, who now represents Sassuolo after his time at Watford, underwent surgery in Vancouver shortly after the match.
Madibo later visited the Canadian midfielder in hospital following the operation. The disciplinary decision also leaves Qatar without an experienced midfielder at the most important stage of their campaign.
They must defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final group fixture to retain any hope of progressing into the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile Canada will attempt to put the incident behind them when they face Switzerland. Victory would secure top spot in the group.
