A footballer’s career can change in an instant.
For some players, success on the pitch is only part of the story.
However, in instances like Neymar’s, they can quickly escalate off it.
And when they do, the consequences can be serious.
Star finally speaks out over stabbing incident
Quincy Promes was once considered one of the brightest talents in European football, playing for Ajax and Sevilla.
He represented his country on the international stage, building a reputation as a dangerous attacking player.
But his career has been overshadowed by events away from football.
The case dates to 2020, where an incident took place at a family gathering.
He denied involvement at the time, however, there’s been a significant new development.
According to ESPN NL, Quincy Promes has broken his silence and admitted his involvement in the stabbing of his cousin.
The report states that the former Netherlands international acknowledged the incident, after previously denying wrongdoing.
The case relates to an altercation in which his cousin was stabbed in the knee during a dispute.
Promes had earlier been found guilty of aggravated assault and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The incident took place during a family event, where tensions escalated into violence.
Initial reports suggested the situation quickly got out of control, with the victim suffering serious injuries.
Legal proceedings have continued in the years since.
Promes has spent time playing abroad while the case unfolded in the background, as he’s been banned from playing in Europe.
This was due to a similar incident, where he was found guilty of having an involvement in cocaine trafficking, during 2024.
At various stages, he denied involvement in the stabbing, but new statements now appear to contradict those earlier claims.
They also bring renewed attention to one of football’s most high-profile legal controversies.
