Ajax to officially sign former Arsenal defender

The versatile defender is expected to sign a short-term, appearance-based contract with Ajax.

Arsenal transfer update

Arsenal suffered only their second defeat of the Premier League season last weekend. Mikel Arteta’s men had their hearts broken due to a last-minute Emi Buendia goal.

It sealed a crucial win for Aston Villa. The Birmingham-based side is now 3 points behind Arsenal in third place in the Premier League table.

Now, the Gunners are leading the Premier League table by just two points. Manchester City are behind them, as they defeated Sunderland at the Etihad.

So, Arteta’s men must recoup and focus on their next task at hand, which will be against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Arsenal are going through a tough time due to injuries to their key players. Also, in the summer, they had to terminate the contract of a player who needed further recovery from injury.

Now, according to VI, Ajax are set to complete the signing of former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The 27-year-old has reached a verbal agreement in principle over an initial six-month deal.

The move offers the Japan international a route back into elite football after nearly a year lost to repeated injuries and surgery.

Tomiyasu’s last appearance came on October 5, 2024, when he played the final minutes of Arsenal’s win over Southampton.

What followed was another prolonged spell on the sidelines. It was a cycle of setbacks that included calf and hamstring issues and two knee operations within 12 months.

He terminated his Arsenal contract with mutual agreement in May once it became clear he needed further recovery time.

Now, Tomiyasu is eager to revive his World Cup chances. The versatile defender will sign a short-term, appearance-based contract with Ajax.

The Dutch giants have been wrestling with injuries and form in the Eredivisie. The club are yet to determine when he will be ready for selection.
