Arsenal planning January move for Atletico Madrid star

The Gunners pursued several high-profile attacking targets during the summer without completing those deals.

Arsenal have made a strong start to their Premier League title defence this season. Mikel Arteta’s side sit second after winning six of their opening seven league matches.

Their Champions League campaign has also provided encouraging results during the opening weeks. Arsenal beat Napoli before recording a convincing 3-0 victory against Lille.

They then secured a 2-2 draw away at Bayern Munich. The Gunners strengthened significantly during the summer after winning the Premier League title.

Bruno Guimaraes arrived from Newcastle United for £75 million to reinforce Arteta’s midfield. Arsenal also signed Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis while making Piero Hincapie’s move permanent.

However, their attacking options have since been affected by injury problems. Tzolis started brightly after joining from Club Brugge but is now unavailable.

Bukayo Saka could also face time on the sidelines. Arsenal are consequently assessing another attacking addition ahead of the winter transfer window.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are targeting a potential January move for Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena.

The Spain international has registered 10 goal contributions for Atletico and his country this season.

Baena has scored six goals and provided four assists across club matches and recent Nations League fixtures. His versatility could provide Arteta with another option across Arsenal’s attacking line.

The Gunners pursued several high-profile attacking targets during the summer without completing those deals.

Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez were among the players on their list. Arsenal eventually added Tzolis, but his injury has reduced their options on the left.

Eberechi Eze can operate there but is more comfortable centrally. Noni Madueke can also cover the position but has primarily played on the right.

A January agreement for Baena could still prove difficult. Atletico Madrid consider him an important player and would not want to lose him cheaply midway through the campaign. Manchester City are also monitoring Baena.

Arsenal must therefore decide whether to push for Baena in January as Arteta looks to strengthen his attacking depth.
