The 2026 World Cup is approaching fast. But right now, football is not the main focus. Instead, rising global tensions have started to spill into the tournament build-up.
And now, a fresh statement from Donald Trump has added even more heat to the situation. The competition will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer.
However, recent military developments involving the US and Iran have already created disruption. At the same time, several countries have made their positions clear.
Major European nations have refused to get involved in the conflict. Leaders like Keir Starmer, Pedro Sanchez, and Emmanuel Macron have all publicly distanced themselves from any military escalation.
Italy have taken a similar stance. That decision has not gone unnoticed. In fact, it has now triggered a strong response from Donald Trump.
The US President took to Truth Social and directly criticised multiple allied nations. He expressed frustration at their refusal to support ongoing military operations against Iran. Trump said:
“I am not surprised by their action, however, because I always considered NATO, where we spend Hundreds of Billions of Dollars per year protecting these same Countries, to be a one way street — We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, in particular, in a time of need.”
Donald Trump has used Truth Social before to warn Iran about their participation in the tournament, as Transfer News Live reported. Also, Iran issued a strong response to his comments.
Trump’s comments targeted several World Cup nations such as Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, as well as the United Kingdom through England and Scotland.
In addition, Donald Trump also named Japan, South Korea, and Australia. Altogether, he called out thirteen countries participating in the upcoming World Cup.
For now, the situation remains tense. And while the World Cup is meant to unite nations through football, the political backdrop is becoming harder to ignore.
I will always make decisions in the national interest. That’s why we did not join the offensive action against Iran.
