The international career of Guillermo Ochoa has spanned two remarkable decades, making him one of the most recognisable figures in Mexican football history.
The veteran goalkeeper has represented his country across multiple generations and established himself as one of the World Cup‘s most memorable performers.
The 2026 tournament appears set to mark the final chapter of that journey.
Ochoa came off the bench during Mexico’s final group-stage match against the Czech Republic, allowing supporters to bid farewell to one of the nation’s greatest servants on football’s biggest stage.
However, the emotional occasion quickly gave way to an unexpected talking point away from the action itself.
Sharp-eyed supporters noticed a detail on Ochoa’s shirt that immediately raised questions about FIFA’s newest World Cup initiative.
According to GiveMeSport, Ochoa wore FIFA’s new Legacy patch despite appearing not to meet the governing body’s eligibility requirements.
FIFA introduced the patch for players who have featured on the pitch in five or more separate World Cups.
Stars including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric qualify under that criterion after making appearances across at least five editions of the tournament.
Ochoa’s inclusion initially appeared logical because Mexico selected him for six consecutive World Cups dating back to 2006.
However, FIFA’s own guidelines focus on tournament appearances rather than squad selections.
The goalkeeper remained an unused substitute throughout both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
As a result, he has only played during the 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions. It leaves him one tournament short of the required total for the Legacy patch.
Despite the controversy, the situation does little to diminish Ochoa’s standing within Mexican football.
The 40-year-old has built a reputation through countless spectacular performances and memorable displays against some of the world’s strongest nations.
Whether the badge belonged on Ochoa’s shirt or not, his place among Mexico’s greatest World Cup players remains beyond dispute.
