Jordan Henderson suffers freak injury after Mexico win

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and formed a protective circle.

England reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a thrilling 3-2 victory over tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

The match started an hour late because of thunderstorms, but England wasted no time once play got underway.

Jude Bellingham struck twice in just 98 seconds to put Thomas Tuchel’s side in control before Julian Quinones reduced the deficit before half-time.

The contest swung again after the break when Jarell Quansah received a straight red card.

Harry Kane restored England’s two-goal cushion from the penalty spot before Raul Jimenez converted from 12 yards for Mexico.

Despite heavy late pressure and 11 minutes of stoppage time, England held on to book a quarter-final meeting with Norway. The celebrations, however, quickly took an unfortunate turn.

Jordan Henderson suffered a freak wrist injury while celebrating England’s victory with supporters behind the goal.

The Brentford midfielder remained an unused substitute throughout the match and attempted to jump over the advertising boards after the final whistle but landed awkwardly.

Video footage showed Jordan Henderson using his wrist to break his fall before collapsing in pain. Harry Kane initially tried to ease concerns after the celebrations.

However, England manager Thomas Tuchel later confirmed the injury appeared far more serious. Tuchel said (via The Sun):

“Not good. Jordan fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It’s quite a serious injury.”

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and formed a protective circle around Henderson before placing him on a stretcher.

He received oxygen treatment before being taken to the hospital. According to reports, Henderson remained there overnight with a member of England’s medical staff.

The midfielder’s injury capped a chaotic night at the Azteca. Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez also suffered a serious ankle injury late in stoppage time.
