Martin O’Neill in hospital after surgery

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill remains in hospital.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill remains in hospital after undergoing what the club described as a ‘small procedure.’

The Scottish champions confirmed the update in an official statement after speculation surrounding the 74-year-old’s condition.

The club did not disclose the nature of the procedure but said they expect O’Neill to be discharged within the next day or two. Celtic posted on social media:

“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital.”

The statement added that the club expects O’Neill to be released ‘in the next day or two’. The club thanked supporters for their kind wishes.

Celtic also asked fans to respect the privacy of O’Neill and his family. O’Neill was in the dugout on Monday as Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership campaign. They secured a 1-0 home victory over Dundee.

The experienced manager signed a one-year contract in June. He led Celtic to a remarkable domestic double during two interim spells last season.

He overturned a six-point deficit to win the Scottish Premiership before adding the Scottish Cup to complete a memorable campaign.

O’Neill first made his name at Celtic between 2000 and 2005. During that spell, he won three Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and guided the club to the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

Away from Parkhead, he also enjoyed successful spells with Leicester City, Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland.

He won two League Cups with Leicester, established Aston Villa as regular top-six Premier League finishers and led Ireland to the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

After leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019, O’Neill spent six years away from management before making a surprise return to Celtic in October 2025.

His latest spell has already delivered two more major trophies, taking his total haul with the club to nine.
