Newcastle United chief casts doubt over Eddie Howe’s future

Players like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon could leave, especially if Newcastle fail to secure European football.

Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United is now under serious focus. The club are expected to review his position in the summer.

This season has not gone as planned. Results have been inconsistent, and the club have failed to meet expectations.

The situation worsened after the recent derby defeat. Newcastle lost 2-1 to Sunderland at home.

So, that result sparked strong reactions. Fans openly questioned the direction of the club for the first time in years.

Following that defeat, CEO David Hopkinson held talks with Howe. The two had a detailed discussion about the current situation.

However, the club have not made a final decision yet. Hopkinson said (via The Sun):

“I don’t have a stance on his future. What I can tell you is the derby loss hurt and we take it seriously.

“We are not looking to make a change at the moment. We are focused on the seven matches we have remaining.”

So, Eddie Howe remains in charge for now. But his future will be discussed once the season ends. There are also bigger concerns around the squad.

Newcastle are on the verge of missing out on the Champions League qualification. That could lead to major changes in the summer. The club are now shifting stance with player sales.

They understand that big names could leave if the right offers arrive. Hopkinson even admitted that the sale of Alexander Isak last summer was a good decision for the club. He said:

“We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer.

“But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club.

“Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well.”

Meanwhile, players like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon could leave, especially if Newcastle fail to secure European football.
