Neymar has spent much of the past year answering questions about his future. The 34-year-old returned to Santos after an injury-hit spell away from Brazil.
He also fought his way back into the national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a lengthy absence. However, injuries limited his involvement during the tournament.
Brazil then suffered a shock Round of 16 exit, leaving fresh doubts over what would come next for one of the country’s greatest players. His future has remained a major talking point ever since.
Speculation has surrounded both his club career and whether he would continue representing his country.
Reports have also linked him with another move after his Santos contract, while retirement rumours have continued to grow.
Speaking after a Santos match (via Globo), Neymar confirmed he has retired from international football with Brazil. He also made it clear that his decision is final. Neymar said:
“My time with the national team is over. I made history, I was very happy, I gave my blood, my life, I always fought and gave everything for the yellow jersey, but now I no longer want to do it.”
The forward admitted the World Cup exit marked the end of his journey with Brazil after an international career that made him the nation’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer.
His latest comments also reinforced the emotional message he delivered immediately after Brazil’s elimination. He said:
“I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I’m the captain. I have the right to speak.”
While Neymar has closed the door on any return for Brazil, his club future remains undecided.
His current Santos contract expires in December, and he is expected to take time to assess his next move before deciding whether to continue playing or bring his professional career to an end.
