Manchester City are preparing for a crucial FA Cup semi-final, but fitness concerns around key players continue to shape their plans.
The clash with Southampton comes at an important moment in the season. City have just moved to the top of the Premier League after their 1-0 win over Burnley, overtaking Arsenal in the title race.
However, that momentum has been tested by injury issues. Rodri picked up a groin problem during the 2-1 victory over Arsenal, where he limped off late in the game.
The midfielder then missed the trip to Burnley, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming fixtures. Pep Guardiola has now provided an update on the situation.
Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Rodri has made progress but will not be risked. He said:
“He’s better. No, [he is not likely to play] we don’t want to take the risk.
“I don’t know [if he will be back for the Everton game] but we don’t want to take a risk, because if he’s injured, [and] we lose him [for] the next five games. Rodri is so important.”
His absence has already forced adjustments in the team. Rayan Ait-Nouri came into the starting line-up against Burnley.
Also, Nico O’Reilly moved into midfield alongside Bernardo Silva. Beyond Rodri, Manchester City are also dealing with other defensive concerns.
Ruben Dias remains unavailable due to an ankle issue, while Josko Gvardiol continues his recovery from a long-term leg injury sustained earlier in the year.
With the FA Cup semi-final followed by key league fixtures, City face a delicate balancing act.
For now, Pep Guardiola appears determined to prioritise Rodri’s long-term fitness over short-term risk.
