Some stories arrive completely out of nowhere.
And this one landed in the most dramatic fashion.
The charges are serious.
And the timing, just weeks before the World Cup, couldn’t be more significant.
Raheem Sterling arrested on four charges including drug-driving
According to The Sun, Raheem Sterling was stopped shortly before 9am on Thursday morning after his luxury Lamborghini was involved in a single-vehicle collision with the motorway barriers.
No other vehicles were involved.
Hampshire Police confirmed they arrested a 31-year-old man from Berkshire on suspicion of four separate offences.
He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Neither Sterling’s representatives nor his club Feyenoord had issued a public statement at the time of writing.
The incident comes at a particularly delicate moment in Sterling’s career.
The 31-year-old has been at Feyenoord in the Netherlands this season.
A fresh start after difficult spells that never quite recaptured the consistent brilliance of his best years at Manchester City.
His England career has been similarly inconsistent in recent seasons.
But with the World Cup beginning in less than two weeks, any involvement in a criminal investigation creates enormous complications for the player, his club and the Football Association.
Sterling’s Premier League career brought him extraordinary success.
He was, at his very best, one of the most dynamic attackers England has produced in a generation.
Thursday morning on the M3 is a very different story.
And a World Cup that feels, for now at least, very far away.
