Portugal‘s World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion after a narrow defeat against Spain in the Round of 16.
Roberto Martinez’s side entered the tournament among the favourites but struggled to find consistency throughout the competition.
Their journey finally came to an end when Mikel Merino struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 91st minute. Martinez wasted little time addressing his future after the elimination.
The Spaniard announced his departure shortly after the final whistle and said Portugal needed “a new voice and a new leader” for the next chapter.
The Portuguese Football Federation quickly moved to find his successor. Reports in Portugal have since indicated that Jorge Jesus will become the country’s next manager.
The 71-year-old currently finds himself without a club after winning the Saudi Pro League title with Al Nassr.
FPF president Pedro Proenca wants Jesus to lead Portugal through to Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. The appointment could also play a significant role in Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future.
According to Pedro Sousa of Correio da Manha Radio (via Record), Jorge Jesus has already agreed to become Portugal manager and should be presented on Friday.
The same report states that Jesus has invited Pepe to become one of his assistant managers with the national team.
Pepe enjoyed one of the most successful careers in modern Portuguese football.
The former defender spent ten years at Real Madrid and made 334 appearances for the Spanish giants.
Alongside Sergio Ramos, he helped Real Madrid win three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and three Champions League crowns.
Pepe also represented Portugal on 141 occasions and established himself as one of the country’s greatest defenders.
Portugal and Jorge Jesus now appear ready to bring that experience back into the national team setup.
