Steven Gerrard could return to football management after almost two years away from the touchline. The Liverpool legend built an outstanding playing career during 17 seasons at Anfield. He made 710 appearances and scored 186 goals for the club.
Gerrard later moved into coaching and enjoyed significant success with Rangers. He guided the Scottish club through an unbeaten 2020–21 league campaign and won the Premiership title.
That achievement earned Gerrard an opportunity with Aston Villa in November 2021. His Premier League spell proved short-lived before he eventually moved to Saudi Arabia.
Gerrard last managed Al-Ettifaq before leaving the club in January 2025. He has since worked as a pundit for TNT Sports between coaching roles. However, a new opportunity could now bring the 46-year-old back into management.
According to talkSPORT, Gerrard is open to taking charge of Wrexham if the Championship club decide to replace Phil Parkinson. Wrexham currently sit 17th in the Championship after a difficult opening to the campaign.
They have collected only two victories from their first 10 league matches. Those results have left them well below their ambitions of challenging for the play-offs.
A 2-1 home defeat against West Brom increased the pressure surrounding Parkinson’s position. Parkinson maintains an excellent relationship with Wrexham’s ownership group, including Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The owners do not currently want to make a managerial change. However, continued poor results could force them to reconsider their position.
Wrexham next face Preston before travelling to Blackburn and Sheffield United. Their upcoming run could therefore prove important for Parkinson’s future.
Gerrard is not the only former Premier League midfielder under consideration. Scott Parker has also emerged as another potential option.
The 45-year-old has previously achieved Championship promotions with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. For Gerrard, however, the Wrexham opportunity could provide an unexpected route back into English football management.
