If you’ve not heard about the story of Wrexham Football Club, are you even a football fan?
Taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, the pair have taken the Welsh side from non-league football to the brink of the English Premier League in unprecedented time.
Currently in the Championship, Wrexham finished last season in 7th place – just two points behind Hull City after failing to either of their final two games.
If they had just won one of those, they would have finished in the playoffs.
As luck would have it, Hull took the final spot and got promoted to the Premier League after beating Middlesbrough in the playoff final.
The story of Wrexham has been followed all around the world and one of the main reasons for that is the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
Initially aired in 2022, fans from around the world have followed the Disney+ series to see how the two famous faces have navigated taking over a football club in the United Kingdom after not knowing much about the sport before.
Welcome to Wrexham’s success has helped the club’s profile around the world with big sponsors paying big money to be associated with the club.
But it’s not all been good times.
As is the nature of sports, people come and go as time goes on and one of the most influential people in the recent history of Wrexham has released a statement stating that he’s left the club.
Humphrey Ker has posted a lengthy message on his Instagram page confirming that he’s officially left the club.
Ker was originally named executive director of the club with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney when they took over the club and was recently a member of the board and trustee for the Wrexham Foundation.
He has confirmed in his statement that he’s left both roles.
For those unaware, it was actually Humphrey Ker who had got the wheels in motion for the takeover in the first place.
Viewers of Welcome to Wrexham would have seen how Ker details watching games of Liverpool Football Club and piquing the interest of Rob McElhenney that got things in motion at the beginning.
Even when the takeover was announced, Ker was a large part of the back and forth between the owners and the club as they looked to navigate this new sporting business venture.
Humphrey Ker leaving is losing a big part of the beginnings of the Wrexham story.
In his statement, Ker states that he’s desperately sad at having left and, interestingly, thanks a number of people but not the owners themselves.
That may be a hint towards the reason of his departure.
Whatever the reality of the situation may be, Wrexham fans will no longer see the friendly face of Humphrey Ker at either the stadium or on their television sets when it comes to the football club.
You can read his statement in full in the post below.
