One of the most interesting English Premier League clubs this summer has been Sunderland.
Back in the top flight after eight years, they have fought hard to make sure they are not just making up the numbers.
They have signed the likes of Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, and Simon Adingra amongst others.
One other player they have tried to sign is Bologna centre half, Jhon Lucumi.
Now, the agent of Lucumi has released a statement, saying: “I carefully read the words of the CEO of Bologna, whom I respect a lot, as well as the club that has accompanied Jhon in these wonderful years.
It’s natural to feel a little disappointment, because our relationship with the club has always been human.
From the beginning, our project was linked to a stay of two or three years, recognising in Jhon [as] a constantly growing player.
Last year we were asked to stay and did so with great availability.
This year, however, since the beginning of last season, the message has always been clear on both sides.
If the right offer had arrived, Jhon would have the possibility of a transfer.
I therefore hope that on the part of Bologna there can be a reflection that allows us to find a balanced and positive situation for everyone.
I understand the importance of the club and the player, and I only expect that our request can also be understood.”
Interesting statement to say the least. It is clear that his agent wants the move.
Last season, Lucumi played a big part in Bologna winning the Coppa Italia – their first trophy since 1974.
As a result, his name will have gone down in club folklore, so you hope a messy ending won’t tarnish that.
For Sunderland meanwhile, this would be an incredible coup.
Lucumi is a brilliant, dominant defender who would help Regis Le Bris massively.
We can expect Sunderland to have a number of games this season where they have to defend deep.
Having Lucumi, Alderete, and Dan Ballard in the defence would be sublime for box defending.
