Aston Villa interested in ex-Barcelona youngster

Aston Villa ready £15m bid for ex-Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba.

Some players carry the weight of unfulfilled potential for years.

The talent was always obvious.

The path to delivering on it consistently never quite materialised.

Ilaix Moriba is one of those players.

And Aston Villa believe this summer might be the moment he finally arrives.

Aston Villa ready £15m bid for ex-Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba

According to Football Insider, Villa are considering a move for the 23-year-old Guinea international, with Unai Emery’s side prepared to table an offer of between £10 million and £15 million for a player Celta Vigo have valued at £25 million.

The gap between those figures is significant.

But Villa believe Champions League football could prove the decisive factor, giving them a platform that most clubs of Moriba’s interest cannot match.

Celta Vigo need a big sale this summer to manage their financial situation.

They paid just £5 million to sign Moriba from RB Leipzig last summer and are now looking to make a “big profit”, placing a £25 million valuation on a player they’ve seen develop considerably in the year since his arrival.

Moriba contributed two goals and three assists in La Liga last term, alongside 11 appearances in the Europa League as Celta secured European qualification.

It’s a modest return on paper.

But the underlying picture is more compelling than the numbers suggest.

His story began at Barcelona’s La Masia academy, one of the most coveted teenage prospects in Spanish football before a contractual dispute led to his departure to Leipzig at just 18.

Germany didn’t work.

Three loan spells across Valencia twice and Getafe followed, development interrupted, confidence fragile, potential still untapped.

But something shifted at Celta Vigo.

Moriba finally looks like the player people believed he would become.

His physical profile has always been an elite, powerful, technically capable with both feet.

Now the performances are beginning to match that ceiling on a more consistent basis.

For Villa, the midfield core is already strong, Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana providing a formidable base.

Moriba wouldn’t arrive as a starter.

He would arrive as a developmental option with high upside, someone who, at 23 and finally finding his feet, could grow into a significant asset.

The Champions League card is Villa’s strongest one to play.

Whether Celta Vigo will accept a compromise somewhere between Villa’s ceiling and their own floor remains to be seen.

But the conversation is happening.

And Moriba is listening.
