They beat Malaga 2-0 before drawing 2-2 with Villarreal after Giuliano Simeone scored a late equaliser.
Meanwhile, the club have reshaped their squad following Antoine Griezmann’s departure during the summer transfer window.
Atletico signed Lee Kang-in, Alejandro Grimaldo and Morten Hjulmand as they continued rebuilding Diego Simeone’s squad.
However, Julian Alvarez’s future remains unresolved, with Arsenal and Barcelona both pushing for the Argentine forward.
Aston Villa have also endured a difficult start after losing 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup.
Unai Emery’s side then suffered a heavy 4-0 Premier League defeat against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Villa have also undergone major transfer changes after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117 million.
Ezri Konsa also joined Arsenal, while Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Zion Suzuki arrived during the window.
The club are now looking for further reinforcements before the market closes.
According to The Sun, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa have both agreed personal terms with Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson.
The two clubs are now battling to complete a £65 million deal with Chelsea before the transfer deadline.
Villa currently hold an advantage because negotiations to sell Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal have reached an advanced stage.
Atletico, meanwhile, are still trying to resolve Alvarez’s future before committing to another attacking deal.
Jackson spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, and Chelsea made him surplus to requirements last summer.
Emery previously handed Jackson his first-team debut at Villarreal and now wants to work with him again.
However, Villa face complications after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea in the same transfer window.
UEFA could therefore treat the two deals as a swap, creating financial implications for both clubs.
Atletico avoid those complications, but both clubs continue pushing hard to sign Jackson before the window closes.
