FC Barcelona’s financial reality has reshaped the way the club operates in the transfer market in recent years.
In the past, the Blaugrana was able to sanction eye-watering deals for marquee names. But now, the Catalans have acted with far greater restraint and creativity.
However, that shift has not been without success. Over recent seasons, Barcelona have made the free-agent market work in their favour.
They signed players who either strengthened the squad immediately or provided long-term value. That strategy remains very much alive as the club plans ahead for next summer.
According to Sky Sport Germany, Barcelona are keeping close tabs on Leon Goretzka, whose contract at Bayern Munich expires at the end of the season.
The report suggests the 30-year-old is already exploring his options amid a strained relationship with Bayern’s hierarchy.
As a result, a free transfer in the summer is becoming an increasingly realistic scenario. Crucially, Goretzka’s potential interest in Barcelona is closely linked to Hansi Flick.
The midfielder enjoyed some of the best years of his career under Flick in Munich, playing a key role in a title-laden period for the German giants.
Meanwhile, Spanish outlets claim that Goretzka has already made contact with Flick’s entourage to make his availability known.
However, Barcelona are not alone. Napoli are also reportedly monitoring the situation, meaning competition could emerge if Goretzka does become a free agent.
From a sporting perspective, the German offers a very different profile to Barcelona’s current midfield options.
However, questions remain over whether investing in a 30-year-old on significant wages aligns with the club’s long-term strategy.
For now, Barcelona are simply observing. Whether Deco and the club’s decision-makers decide to act is another matter entirely.
