Barcelona reignite interest in Tottenham Hotspur star

Tottenham will not make negotiations easy.

Barcelona enjoyed another successful domestic season under Hansi Flick in 2025/26.  The Catalan giants reclaimed the La Liga title and secured the Supercopa de España.

However, they faced disappointment in Europe and the Copa del Rey. The club have responded with an aggressive summer rebuild.

Anthony Gordon arrived from Newcastle United in an €80 million deal, while Karim Adeyemi joined from Borussia Dortmund to strengthen the attack.

Barcelona have also added young Belgian talent Jesse Bisiwu and moved on several high earners, including Robert Lewandowski and Ansu Fati. Attention has now turned towards the defence.

According to El Nacional, Flick has personally asked Barcelona to sign another centre-back before the transfer window closes.

The German manager wants a more aggressive defender who is comfortable defending high up the pitch and capable of bringing leadership to the back line.

That request has led Barcelona back to Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone admires the Argentina international. He has attempted to sign his compatriot on several occasions.

However, Barcelona have now reignited their own interest in the defender and are preparing to challenge Atletico for his signature.

Romero’s stock has risen once again following an outstanding World Cup campaign with Argentina. The 28-year-old has been one of the standout defenders of the tournament.

He helped guide the reigning world champions into the semi-finals, where they will face England.

Castello Lukeba also remains under consideration as a younger option, but Romero is viewed as the more established solution. Now, Tottenham will not make negotiations easy.

The North London club value their captain between €60 million and €80 million and remain reluctant to lose one of their most important players.

Despite that stance, Barcelona are once again exploring the possibility of bringing Romero to the Camp Nou.
