Chelsea have entered the final days of the summer transfer window with several major decisions still ahead.
The Blues appointed Xabi Alonso after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and have heavily reshaped their squad.
Chelsea spent £120 million to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and also added Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra.
Meanwhile, the club sold Andrey Santos to Manchester United and Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid during the same window.
Chelsea have also worked on finding solutions for players such as Mykhailo Mudryk and Axel Disasi before the deadline.
However, their attention has now turned towards another major attacking opportunity involving one of Europe’s most productive forwards.
Julian Alvarez enjoyed an outstanding 2024/25 campaign for Atletico Madrid, scoring 29 goals across 53 appearances in all competitions.
He scored 17 times in La Liga, seven times in the Champions League and added five Copa del Rey goals.
Alvarez also played a key role for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the final.
He scored a spectacular extra-time winner against Switzerland in the quarter-finals and earned Man of the Match honours.
Following the tournament, Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid and pursue a new challenge.
Barcelona remain his preferred destination, while Arsenal have also emerged as serious contenders for his signature this summer.
However, Atletico have resisted selling Alvarez to Barcelona, opening the door for Premier League clubs to explore a move.
According to Nicolo Schira, Chelsea discussed the possibility of signing Julian Alvarez during talks with Atletico Madrid in London last Thursday.
Chelsea explored Alvarez’s situation while Atletico opened negotiations over a possible move for Nicolas Jackson.
Atletico have shown interest in Jackson, while Aston Villa are also working on a deal for the Chelsea forward.
Chelsea have already enquired about Alvarez’s availability as they consider whether to enter the race more seriously.
The situation could now develop further as Atletico continue talks over Jackson and Chelsea assess their attacking options.
With Barcelona and Arsenal already interested, Chelsea have now added another major Premier League presence to the race for Alvarez.
