Julian Alvarez faces an uncertain future at Atletico Madrid after publicly expressing his desire to leave the Spanish club.
The Argentina international said during the World Cup that “a transfer is the best option” and wants to “fulfil my dream”.
Multiple sources believe that dream involves joining Barcelona, who have made Alvarez their top attacking target this summer.
However, Atletico have strongly resisted Barcelona’s approach and do not want to strengthen a direct La Liga rival.
The situation became even more tense when Atletico supporters whistled and insulted Alvarez during their 2-2 draw against Villarreal.
Fans jeered his name before kick-off and directed more whistles towards him when he entered during the second half.
Some supporters also chanted against him, while Alvarez went straight down the tunnel after the final whistle.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have maintained their interest and contacted both Atletico and Alvarez’s camp last week about a possible transfer.
According to The Athletic, Atletico Madrid would consider selling Julian Alvarez to Arsenal if the Gunners submit a €150 million (£128m) offer.
However, Atletico currently consider it unlikely that Arsenal will commit that level of money before the September 1 deadline.
Arsenal also want encouragement from Alvarez before advancing negotiations because his preference for Barcelona remains well known.
The Gunners have admired Alvarez for some time and believe only a small group of forwards can significantly improve their squad.
However, Alvarez currently remains more interested in Barcelona than returning to the Premier League, where he previously played for Manchester City.
Diego Simeone also stressed the importance of unity while Atletico continue dealing with uncertainty around Alvarez.
With Barcelona facing firm resistance and Arsenal yet to make the required offer, Alvarez’s future remains unresolved.
