Chelsea eye move for Barcelona starlet in January

It would be a major coup for the Premier League side.

Enzo Maresca

Chelsea have been busy reshaping their midfield in recent seasons. Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo have all arrived with the long-term plan in mind.

But problems remain. Lavia’s injury struggles continue. Also Essugo is sidelined until at least December. Thus, questions persist over whether the squad has the balance Enzo Maresca desires.

That is why the club is once again looking to the market. Having failed in their pursuit of Fermin López last summer, attention has shifted elsewhere.

This time, the focus is on a teenager who has just returned from over a year out with a serious knee injury.

Marc Bernal came off the bench in his side’s 6-0 win at the weekend, greeted by huge cheers from the Barcelona fans. His manager, Hansi Flick, made it clear how important the moment was:

“I think after this long journey, from injury to returning to the pitch, especially for him and his family, it’s a great moment because he’s worked so hard over the last year. You can also see it in the stadium with the fans, how they celebrate.”

It means a lot to everyone at this club and especially to the team. I always say this team is incredible, the relationship they have is fantastic, and you could also see that when he arrived. It’s great, really great. I’m very happy for him, for his family, and also for us that he’s back.”

According to Fichajes, Chelsea are determined to make Marc Bernal their next big midfield signing.

The Blues will send scouts to track him closely in the coming months. So, a January approach from the London club could be on the cards.

Bernal’s current deal runs out next summer, but an extension until 2029 is expected. Still, Chelsea see him as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe.

If they can somehow prise Bernal away from Camp Nou, it would be a major coup for the Premier League side.
