Alejandro Garnacho endured a frustrating first season at Chelsea following his move from Manchester United.
The Argentine arrived at Stamford Bridge for £40 million but struggled to establish himself.
He managed eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions. However, only one of those goals arrived in the Premier League.
Garnacho also found himself behind Pedro Neto in the pecking order for large parts of the campaign. His difficult season eventually cost him a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.
His future has become even more uncertain in recent weeks. The winger has reportedly failed to report for pre-season training under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea are open to selling him and would prefer a permanent transfer this summer. AS Roma are currently leading the race, although clubs in Germany and Saudi Arabia are also interested.
His departure would continue a major rebuild at Stamford Bridge following a miserable campaign. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League after a season dominated by instability.
Enzo Maresca left midway through the campaign before Liam Rosenior and Calum McFarlane also took charge.
The Blues also crashed out of the Champions League after an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Missing out on European football ultimately forced the club into another reset.
Attention has now turned towards Portugal, where one of Europe’s brightest young wingers enhanced his reputation last season.
According to A Bola, Chelsea see Benfica star Andreas Schjelderup as a leading option to replace Alejandro Garnacho. Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the Norwegian international.
Schjelderup enjoyed an impressive campaign with Benfica, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 28 league matches.
He then carried that form into the World Cup with Norway. The 22-year-old registered four goal contributions during Norway’s run to the quarter-finals.
Benfica are willing to discuss a sale if their valuation is met. The Portuguese club initially wanted around €40 million for the winger.
However, his World Cup performances have reportedly pushed that figure closer to €50 million.
🚨 Benfica are set to increase Andreas Schjelderup’s valuation following his impressive performances for Norway at the World Cup. 🇳🇴📈
Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are all known admirers of the winger, but any interested club will now have to pay a higher fee. 💰
