Chelsea have entered another crucial summer transfer window after an underwhelming Premier League campaign exposed several weaknesses across the squad.
Improving the defence has become one of the club’s biggest priorities as Xabi Alonso prepares for his first full season at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues conceded 52 league goals last season, leaving them with one of the weakest defensive records among the division’s top half.
Strengthening the back line has therefore become essential if Chelsea hope to return to the Premier League’s leading positions.
Several centre-backs have appeared on the club’s shortlist in recent weeks. However, Maxence Lacroix has now emerged as the standout candidate after an impressive campaign.
Chelsea have also received clarity over the financial commitment required to complete a deal.
According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace will demand at least £50 million before considering the sale of Lacroix this summer.
The France international has become one of Chelsea’s top defensive targets following an outstanding first season at Selhurst Park.
Palace would prefer to keep the 26-year-old, but the report claims they could sanction his departure if their valuation is met. Maxence Lacroix featured in 35 Premier League matches last season.
He also played a key role in Crystal Palace’s successful Conference League campaign. His performances established him as one of the division’s most consistent central defenders.
For now, Palace remain under no pressure to sell. Chelsea, therefore, know they must meet the £50 million asking price if they want to secure Maxence Lacroix.
🚨 Chelsea are targeting Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix as they continue their search for a new centre-back.
The Blues want to add more height and physical presence to their defence, with Lacroix fitting the profile they are looking for.
