Xabi Alonso wants Chelsea to sign Crystal Palace star

Crystal Palace remain in a strong negotiating position.

Chelsea face a crucial summer as Xabi Alonso begins reshaping his squad at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard inherited a team that showed promise but still lacks balance in several areas.

Club officials are now working closely with Alonso to identify the positions that require immediate attention. Defensive improvements sit high on that agenda.

The recent departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid has already created one vacancy in the squad. However, Chelsea’s concerns extend beyond replacing the Spanish defender.

Last season exposed several weaknesses that Alonso wants to address before the new campaign begins. One of the biggest issues involved defending set pieces.

Chelsea often struggled against physically imposing opponents and lacked height across the back line. The club now appears determined to solve that problem.

According to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix has emerged as a serious target.

Chelsea reportedly view the Frenchman as a player capable of adding both experience and physicality.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. Since arriving at Selhurst Park, Lacroix has played 98 matches in all competitions.

He also helped Crystal Palace enjoy the most successful period in the club’s history. The Eagles lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield and Conference League during that time.

Lacroix played a major role in those achievements. His arrival could complement Levi Colwill and bring greater balance to the defence. However, completing a deal may not prove straightforward.

Crystal Palace remain in a strong negotiating position because Lacroix still has three years remaining on his contract.

His involvement with France at the World Cup is also likely to increase his value. Palace will therefore feel little pressure to sell.

Chelsea also face other obstacles. The club will not compete in Europe next season, while Palace have secured Europa League football.

However, as Alonso looks to strengthen a vulnerable defence, the Crystal Palace star remains firmly on the club’s radar.
