Chelsea continue to shape their plans for the new season under Xabi Alonso. The Blues have already entered a new era following Alonso’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.
After securing Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid and exploring several transfer opportunities, Chelsea remain active in the market as they look to strengthen key areas of the squad.
Naturally, that has led to speculation surrounding some of Europe’s biggest names. One player recently linked with a surprise move to Stamford Bridge is Florian Wirtz.
The Germany international only joined Liverpool last summer in a club-record £100 million deal after leaving Bayer Leverkusen. The links emerged because of Alonso’s relationship with the player.
Wirtz enjoyed tremendous success under the Spaniard at Bayer Leverkusen, helping the club achieve a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign.
As a result, reports suggested Alonso could look to reunite with the attacking midfielder at Chelsea. However, Chelsea have now made their position clear.
According to football.london, the club has no plans to pursue Wirtz this summer. The report states that Chelsea sources have dismissed the speculation.
The Blues have ruled out any attempt to sign the Liverpool star. That decision appears to end talk of a reunion.
Wirtz endured a mixed first season at Anfield following his high-profile transfer. The 23-year-old registered seven goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
As things stand, the playmaker remains part of Liverpool’s plans heading into the new campaign.
