Cristian Romero nears Tottenham Hotspur exit as club sporting director confirms transfer talks

Romero enjoyed an outstanding FIFA World Cup with Argentina after a difficult domestic campaign at Tottenham.

The future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham Hotspur is becoming increasingly uncertain. The Argentina international has been expected to leave since before the end of last season.

Now, the situation has taken another significant step forward after a club sporting director publicly confirmed contact over a potential transfer.

Romero enjoyed an outstanding FIFA World Cup with Argentina after a difficult domestic campaign at Tottenham.

However, his future now appears to lie away from North London as discussions continue behind the scenes.

According to Sky Italia, Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed the Serie A champions have already expressed their interest in signing Romero. Ausilio said:

“There is certainly interest and we expressed our interest to both the player and the club.

“These things take a long time, but there is certainly interest, so we’ll see.”

The report adds that Inter are preparing an opening proposal worth €40 million through a loan with an obligation to buy.

Tottenham, however, want €50 million for their captain, leaving the two clubs with work to do before reaching an agreement.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has made his position clear regarding players who no longer want to remain at the club. The Spurs boss said (via ESPN):

“I was very clear at the start of my time in Tottenham. I said, who doesn’t want to stay in Tottenham? Who is not happy, is not proud to stay here, has to leave.

“I want the players to be proud and happy to stay here, to go on the pitch in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with big motivation.”

Barcelona had also shown interest in Romero earlier in the window, but their focus has now shifted elsewhere.

That has left Inter in the strongest position as negotiations continue over a return to Serie A for the 28-year-old.

Cristian Romero previously represented Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta before joining Tottenham for €53.8M in 2021.
