Crystal Palace are preparing for a new era under Pierre Sage following Oliver Glasner’s departure from Selhurst Park.
The Eagles enjoyed a historic campaign in Europe last season but now face an important summer in the transfer market. One area attracting particular attention is central defence.
Maxence Lacroix has emerged as a target for several European clubs following two impressive seasons in South London.
Chelsea are among the clubs monitoring the French defender ahead of the new campaign.
While Palace have not received any formal offers, uncertainty surrounding his future has forced the club to assess alternatives.
According to the Evening Standard, Crystal Palace have identified Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima as a potential replacement for Lacroix.
The report states that the Frenchman is one of several centre-back options currently under consideration by the club. Talks with Augsburg have not yet taken place at this stage.
However, Palace are continuing to monitor the situation closely as they prepare for every possible scenario.
Matsima became an important player for Augsburg during the 2025-26 campaign before a tendon injury disrupted his season.
The defender still managed 18 Bundesliga appearances as the German side narrowly missed out on European qualification.
The 24-year-old won a silver medal with France at the 2024 Olympic Games under Thierry Henry.
He also shared the dressing room with current Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta during the tournament. Any deal could prove difficult to complete, however.
Matsima remains under contract with Augsburg until 2030 and Bayern Munich have also made enquiries about his availability.
For now, Crystal Palace are simply keeping a close eye on one of the defenders attracting growing interest across Europe.
