England booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in Atlanta.
Harry Kane scored both goals to complete the turnaround, but the victory also brought fresh concern over one of Thomas Tuchel’s most important players.
Declan Rice was substituted late in the match after another tireless performance, with the Arsenal midfielder seen applying ice to his left hamstring on the bench.
The sight immediately raised questions over his availability for England’s upcoming clash against tournament co-hosts Mexico.
However, Rice quickly moved to calm those fears after the final whistle. Speaking after the match, the England vice-captain said to BBC Radio 5 Live (via Daily Mirror):
“I’m fine. Good as gold. Good. It’s what happens when you play in 30 degree heat I suppose. Tough game. Give it everything and bodies been through a lot in that match. Time to recover and go again.”
Rice also reflected on his unexpected switch to right-back during the closing stages of the game.
“It was probably the hardest 12 minutes of the game having a stint at right back.
“I have played there two or three times this season, I know the role, it is probably not my biggest strength but to do anything for the team and the manager.
“Let’s see what happens next game but hopefully I don’t have to be at right back.”
The update will come as welcome news for England after Rice’s demanding season with Arsenal.
Declan Rice played a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign before carrying that form into the World Cup.
He registered an assist against Croatia and featured prominently throughout the tournament.
Unless England’s medical staff discover a more serious issue over the coming days, Rice will be available for the last-16 meeting with Mexico.
