Bayer Leverkusen are preparing for a major rebuild this summer.
After a season that saw them miss out on the Bundesliga title, the German club are entering a new era.
Xabi Alonso has departed for Real Madrid, and with Erik ten Hag now at the helm, change is not just expected, it is inevitable.
One of the first areas the Dutchman has identified for reinforcement is the goalkeeping department.
While Lukas Hradecky has served as a reliable figure between the posts, the incoming manager wants to inject fresh competition and a different profile to fit his system.
Leverkusen’s recruitment team have wasted no time. Discussions have already been initiated with a Premier League club.
The player in question is seen as calm under pressure, adept with his feet, and tactically disciplined; qualities ten Hag highly values.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Leverkusen have made strong progress in talks to sign Brentford’s Mark Flekken.
The Dutch international has been on their radar since last season, and now, they are moving fast.
A verbal agreement on personal terms is already in place. Flekken is reportedly open to the move and sees Leverkusen’s project under ten Hag as the right step forward in his career.
The Bundesliga club are now negotiating directly with Brentford, working on the financial structure of the deal.
Flekken made 37 appearances for Brentford last season and kept nine clean sheets.
Known for his shot-stopping reflexes and composure in possession, he fits the profile Leverkusen are targeting.
Should the deal go through, it would be one of ten Hag’s first signings and a clear sign that Leverkusen are not settling for second-best again.
They want to build a team ready to challenge both domestically and in Europe, and Mark Flekken could soon be a key part of that vision.
