Liverpool had a busy summer transfer window. However, there is every chance that the work will continue in January.
The Reds have already identified the need for a new central defender after Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury.
Ibrahima Konate suffered an injury as well during Liverpool’s visit to Stamford Bridge this weekend.
But there is also a doubt about one of their existing players. Liverpool cannot sell Joe Gomez in January.
The England star was close to leaving Liverpool in the summer. A move to AC Milan looked possible until Marc Guehi’s proposed transfer from Crystal Palace collapsed.
Since then, Gomez has stayed at Anfield and provided valuable cover in defence. But in 2026, it seems almost certain that the long-serving star will eventually move on.
However, according to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, such a move will not happen this January.
The reporter confirmed that Gomez is not considering a departure mid-season and is happy to remain at Liverpool as long as he is part of Arne Slot’s plans. O’Rourke said:
“As long as Joe Gomez is needed and is playing games, I think he’s happy at Liverpool. There was obviously interest from AC Milan in the summer window. I’m sure there’s still interest from some foreign clubs in Gomez as well.
But Liverpool’s current plight means that they can’t even consider letting Gomez go. They’re probably looking to bring in another centre-back, not lose a centre-back in January. So I think that’ll be the current situation.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s defensive situation is concerning. The injury to Leoni and Konate has left them short of options. The club is now heavily depending on Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Therefore, losing Gomez in January would only create more problems. From Liverpool’s point of view, there is no reason to sell him now.
